HOPE

Picture

Light

Today we light the candle of hope. Hope is the desire for something to happen. We light a candle of hope as we wait for the birth of Jesus.
Read 2 Corinthians 4:18, "We don't focus on the things that can be seen but on the things that can't be seen. The things that can be seen don't last, but the things that can't be seen are eternal."
As we light the candle of hope, may we remember to focus on the unseen things that are most important.

Question - What are things you cannot see that are very important?

Learn

Watch the video of the children's book, One Little Bag: An Amazing Journey by Henry Cole. Watch it here.
Then, talk about these questions together:
  • What is something that you have had for a while that brings you hope?
  • How might this story relate to the Bible verse in the lighting? (2 Corinthians 4:18)
  • What is your favorite story about hope from Jesus' life?

Do

  • Try making a few of these stars. Pack them in a paper bag and deliver them to neighbors. See the different ways you can spread hope and light.
  • Give everyone a paper bag and markers or crayons to draw on the outside. Throughout Advent, put drawings, pictures, or items that give you hope or happy memories. Advent is a season of hope! On or after Christmas, share what is in the bags

Give

  • Donate flashlights & batteries to a homeless shelter, domestic abuse shelter, or other organization who would find them helpful. (Call first to make sure they need them)
